EXCLUSIVE: Nate Mann (Masters of the Air), Shay Mitchell (Pretty Little Liars) and Tony Award winner Andrew Burnap (The Inheritance) have signed on to star in The Up and Comer, a new thriller directed by Golden Globe and Peabody Award winner Chris Long (The Americans).
Based on the novel from New York Times bestseller Howard Roughan, who adapted the screenplay, the film delves into the seemingly perfect life of Philip Randall (Mann), a brilliant attorney poised to become the youngest partner at his prestigious firm. Philip’s idyllic world begins to unravel when a former prep-school classmate (Burnap) threatens to reveal a devastating secret involving another woman (Mitchell). Suddenly caught in a high stakes game of blackmail, murder and revenge, he’s forced to risk everything, only to face the greatest danger of all — winning.
Stated Long, “Nate, Shay and Andrew are each such incredible talents, and I’m thrilled to be bringing Howard’s stunning script to life with them.”
Set to enter production next month in Chicago, The Up and Comer‘s producers include Jeremy Alter, Roughan, Gary B. Goldman, and Long. Sheila Jaffe and Bryan Riley oversaw casting.
Recently seen playing ace pilot Robert “Rosie” Rosenthal in Apple TV+’s acclaimed WWII miniseries Masters of the Air, Mann’s other credits include Peacock’s Apples Never Fall, Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza, and Showtime’s Ray Donovan.
Mitchell has been seen starring in the acclaimed series You and Dollface for Netflix and Hulu, respectively, as well as Freeform’s Pretty Little Liars. Starring alongside Zoey Deutch and Kendrick Sampson in Prime Video’s holiday rom-com Something from Tiffany’s, she can currently be seen in Thirst with Shay Mitchell, an exotic food and drink-focused travel series on Max.
Winning the Tony for Best Actor in a Play for his work in Matthew Lopez’s The Inheritance, Burnap can currently be seen starring opposite Brandy and Kathryn Hunter in A24’s horror pic The Front Room from the Eggers Brothers. Previously seen on FX’s Under the Banner of Heaven and Apple TV+’s WeCrashed, he’ll next be seen starring in Disney’s live-action adaptation of Snow White.
Perhaps best known for his Golden Globe- and Peabody Award-winning work as exec producer and director of FX’s The Americans, Long’s more recent TV directing credits include FX’s The Patient, as well as Suspicion, The Right Stuff and Amazing Stories for Apple TV+. On the feature side, he previously directed the documentary A Tale of Two Thieves on the so-called “Great Train Robbery” of 1963.
Mann is repped by Entertainment 360 and WME; Mitchell by WME, Linden Entertainment, and Grubman, Shire, Meiselas, & Sacks; Burnap by Beth Rosner Management and UTA; and Long by WME and Rain.
